Frequently asked questions

What does BIPOC mean?

Bla(c)k, Indigenous, and/or people of colour.

What does autonomous mean?

This refers to people that identify as part of a community being the only ones allowed to attend certain events or engage in certain projects. In the context of COAR, the majority of our community events are autonomous to BIPOC people, meaning only people that identify as BIPOC can attend. This is for the purpose of creating safe spaces for BIPOC people to their whole selves in and find community with each other.

How can I help support COAR as a member of the BIPOC community?

COAR welcomes all members of the BIPOC community to engage in our events and projects and be part of building this community - this support is invaluable. You can also support us through whatever capacity you can offer, whether that be through joining the Committee and being part of organising our projects and events, or volunteering on a specific event or project. Simply send us an email at coar.cbr@gmail.com or message our social media platforms and we can discuss your involvement within COAR.

For those that are financially well positioned, we also invite you to donate to our Kofi page to support the ongoing sustainability of our volunteer run Collective and our efforts in creating our beautiful community.

How can I help support COAR as an Ally?

COAR welcomes tangible support from allies through donating to our Kofi page to support the ongoing sustainability of our volunteer run Collective. Allies are also able to support COAR by strengthening their knowledge of anti-racism through engaging with our Anti-Racist Syllabus and joining our monthly discussion group Roar with COAR.

I'm a little confused at all the language, is there somewhere I can go to read more information?

COAR has a Key Terms and Definitions page for specific terminology you may wish to learn of, and we also create and curate resources in our Anti-Racist Syllabus for all to peruse through and deepen their anti-racist knowledge. Click here to access our key terms and definitions.

We acknowledge the traditional owners of the land this Collective was nurtured on – the Ngunnawal and Ngambri peoples. We pay respects to Elders, past and present. We recognise that this land was stolen, and sovereignty was never ceded.

As COAR was founded to fight against white supremacy and racism, we want to recognise and celebrate the long history of First Nations activism. The work done by our Indigenous activist leaders has paved the way for our own activism as a Collective.
