our very first newsletter!!

1. COME TO OUR GIG NIGHT TOMORROW!!!!!!! We are teeming with excitement in anticipation for our first COAR event which is TOMORROW 6PM at The Front (1 Wattle Pl, Lyneham) for a fun BIPOC Gig Night. It’ll be a night to celebrate Canberra BIPOC talent, meet new people (and us, obviously) and just enjoy good food and art…it’s going to be SO. MUCH. FUN!! We literally cannot wait to see you there. In the name of spotlighting BIPOC talent and in gratefulness to the Front for hosting our event, we would love it if you could purchase tickets here: https://events.humanitix.com/coar-bipoc-gig

2. New podcast episode just DROPPED If you aren’t already acquainted with COAR’s podcast, then by the end of this newsletter you simply better be. ‘No More Wahalla, Inshallah’ is a podcast led by our very own Ayah and ‘Toritse (who we miss very much and love all that she’s doing over interstate) and centres the BIPOC experience (who knows that everyone can afford to learn a bit more about that *raise hand*). This episode discusses the criticisms, silences and the White supremacist agenda – it’s interesting, it’s fun, it says their truth and it’s a very, very fun listen. Listen to it here: https://anchor.fm/coarwi or on spotify!!

3. Our cool, fun, fresh new website! Seriously, check it out. It’s awesome. Not much else to be said.https://collectiveonanti-racism.com/

4. ROAR with COARSomething that is in the works for COAR this year is a monthly discussion group we like to call….. Roar with COAR! It’s going to be an epic night once a month where we get together in a relaxed, eager environment ready to discuss all things anti-racism, BIPOC lived experiences and just generally vibe around. It’s going to be very cool and fun so stay tuned for our first one….

5. Zine launch! Members of COAR have been working TIRELESSLY over the past 12 months in the pursuit of releasing a zine which celebrated and illustrated the BIPOC experience at the ANU. While we may not be an ANU association any more, it has really valuable insights into the experiences of BIPOC people in Canberra and so much work and time and talent has been put in to it so make sure to watch out for our launch party to celebrate all things zine.

We acknowledge the traditional owners of the land this Collective was nurtured on – the Ngunnawal and Ngambri peoples. We pay respects to Elders, past and present. We recognise that this land was stolen, and sovereignty was never ceded.

As COAR was founded to fight against white supremacy and racism, we want to recognise and celebrate the long history of First Nations activism. The work done by our Indigenous activist leaders has paved the way for our own activism as a Collective.
